Hell is Other People was a hybrid media project combining virtual production, green screen, multi-screen cinema, live performance and immersive installation. Created for the brief "hybrid realities," the project explored surveillance, propaganda and digital identity through a fictional government screening that slowly collapsed into rebellion.
First imagined as an immersive live screening, Hell is Other People now exists in three distinct forms:

Left abandoned since their failed propaganda screening in April 2025, the Central Corporation's second screening room has been collecting dust for nine months. Step back into the room to experience a new cut of the heretical film, reimagined for a single-screen. In this quintessential version, the documented event is consolidated for viewing outside of the gallery space.

FEBRUARY 2025.
HARROW, LONDON — When we were first discussing project ideas, and ultimately decided to go in the direction we did, a few ideas and references came up that more or less stayed until the end. There's obvious influences from dystopian fiction like Nineteen Eighty-Four and Fahrenheit 451, along with using much of the world building from a previous screenplay I wrote, Emergency Exit. Initial references to Kafka's The Trial, along with the anticonsumerist messages behind books and films like Fight Club.Ultimately, the title is a reference to the 1944 play No Exit, by the philosophical existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre. The suggestion in our film is that as our characters were committing the illegal act of reading the materials they were supposed to be destroying, they came across the phrase in a book or scrawled on a piece of paper.

Once we had a final draft of a script, our first step was looking at Unreal Engine environments we could use for the interrogation scene. We knew that the chances of finding a location that would let us film this type of scene there were slim, and having a virtual environment would give us total control over the space. We turned to virtual production very early on, with Peter sourcing an environment we could use, before we set off to the studio for some test shots.
Still, when deciding how to proceed, one idea kept surfacing: having a multi-screen film, to show different perspectives of the same scene. Initially, I drafted all manner of ideas around this concept, from (attempts at) comedies, to tragedies, to whatever genre Hell is Other People ended up being. We decided the ideas of constant surveillance and inescapable advertising married into this well.
Once we realised the audience themselves could become part of the story, the entire project suddenly clicked into place.
MARCH 2025.
THE QUARRIES, COSGROVE — The Milton Keynes Scout District very kindly allowed us to use a firepit at the Quarries campsite, in Milton Keynes. As one of our main two locations, we see our characters watched from three hidden cameras, all in real-time, and without any cuts. This presented its own logistical challenge — we had to have entire scenes shot in single takes.
This was without a doubt the most technically challenging shoot we'd done as a team, especially needing to have solid no-cut takes, with three cameras rolling constantly, and balancing subject tracking with focus pulling.
The eternally effervescent Oliver Sherwood came on as an additional cinematographer and boom operator for this shoot, and it wouldn't have happened without him. With our wood and fuel fast running out (likely much sooner if it weren't for Eliana!), it was all-hands-on-deck to get everything shot as quickly as possible.
Wrapping for the day at well-gone midnight, we managed to grab a bite to eat before heading off the trek back to Harrow, dropping crew across London, before Oliver and I finally arrived back in Milton Keynes in time to see people starting to leave their houses for work.
